The oval in this ring lies across the finger rather than along it. That single change alters everything: the stone reads as wider, the ring looks lower and more relaxed, and the whole thing stops resembling a conventional engagement ring almost immediately. Around it sits a solid domed halo of metal with six pointed claws reaching in over the girdle, and the band splits below the head so the shank stays slim. There are no accent stones anywhere. Design and craftsmanship

Turning an oval sideways changes how the setting has to be built. In a north south ring the two ends of the stone point toward the shank and the claws at those points do most of the work. Here the ends point out over the edges of the finger with nothing beneath them, so the halo has to carry the load and the claw positions are set to hold the stone against sideways pressure rather than lengthways. Our bench builds the collet first, checks the seat against the actual stone, then shapes the six claws so each one sits at the correct angle for its position around an ellipse rather than a circle. The dome is polished in stages, because a plain metal halo has no stones to hide an uneven surface. Every ring is hand finished in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire. An east west oval presents its widest face to anyone looking at your hand, which means more of that fire is visible from across a table than in the usual orientation. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

White gold, as photographed, keeps the halo cool and lets the stone read as the only bright element. Yellow gold makes the metal halo the loudest part of the design, which suits people who want the ring to look bold rather than delicate. Rose gold sits between. For daily wear 14K resists scratching on the large polished dome better than 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

What does east west mean?
The long axis of the stone runs across the finger rather than up and down it. It is a deliberate alternative to the standard orientation and reads as more modern and less formal.

Does an east west oval look bigger or smaller?
Wider and shorter. It fills the width of the finger rather than stretching along it, so the ring looks broader from the front but takes up less length. People with shorter fingers often prefer the north south version for the lengthening effect.

Is the halo set with small stones?
No, it is solid metal. That is what makes this design graphic rather than sparkly, and it is why there is no pave anywhere on the ring.

How is this different from your other solid halo ring?
Same head construction, stone turned ninety degrees. That one sets the oval along the finger; this one sets it across.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
The halo overhangs the shank, so a straight band meets the ring at the base of the halo with a small gap. A contoured band that curves around the halo edge sits properly and we can make one.

Which centre size suits this setting?
All four, though east west rings look their best when the stone is wide enough to span most of the finger. 3 carat and above make the most of the orientation.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush around the six claws, then a soft cloth over the dome. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth to keep the polish bright.
