Oval Moissanite Double Milgrain Bezel Vintage Engagement Ring

An oval moissanite in a full bezel whose rim carries two separate rows of fine milgrain beading, one at the top edge and one at the base, with further beading running along both edges of the band. There are no accent stones. All the decoration is raised metal.

Milgrain is a row of tiny beads raised with a knurled wheel, from the French for a thousand grains. Two rows rather than one is what separates this from an ordinary milgrain bezel: the rim reads as a banded, layered frame rather than a single line.

How it compares

Our half bezel open frame solitaire leaves the sides of the stone open and has no beading at all, which reads modern. This one closes the bezel and covers it in milgrain, which reads antique. They are opposite intentions using the same setting family.

Why a bezel suits an oval

A bezel follows the whole curve of the stone, which flatters an oval outline, and it protects the two ends, which are the thinnest and most vulnerable parts of the shape. The tradeoff is that a bezel covers the outer edge, so the stone looks slightly smaller than the same stone in claws.

Wearing and stacking

Nothing on this ring catches, which makes it one of the better choices for someone who works with their hands. A milgrain edged wedding band sits beside it particularly well.

Made to order in Surat, India

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat. Milgrain must be raised after the bezel is closed around the stone, not before, or the beads distort as the rim is worked. Every ring is made after you order, usually within 7 to 10 working days.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush. Brush along the beaded rows rather than scrubbing at them. Beading filled with hand cream loses its shadow and the pattern stops reading. Never use an abrasive polish, which flattens the beads permanently. Rinse and dry with a lint free cloth.

Yes. The band carries no stones.

Does milgrain wear away
Slowly, on the parts that rub. It can be recut by any competent jeweller. Choosing 10K or 14K rather than 18K slows it considerably.

Is moissanite hard enough for daily wear
Yes. Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among stones used in jewellery.
