One oval moissanite, four claw prongs, a slim polished band, and nothing else. This is the plainest and most traditional ring in the collection, and it is the design most people picture when they picture an engagement ring. Everything here is in service of the centre stone: the prongs are kept narrow so they cover as little of the oval as possible, the gallery under the head is left open so light reaches the pavilion from below, and the band is slim so the stone reads as large as it can. Design and craftsmanship

The head is built as an open sculpted basket rather than a solid cup, so the underside of the oval is exposed and light passes straight through it. The four prongs are shaped and tapered by hand at the tips, which is what keeps them small enough not to intrude on the face of the stone. The shank is a plain round wire of about 1.7 mm that runs unbroken from the head to the base and is finished to a high polish. Because there is nothing else on the ring, the quality of the polish and the symmetry of the prongs are the only things carrying it, which is why we finish each one by hand at our bench in Surat.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire, which is the quality most buyers notice first. A classic solitaire is where that difference shows most plainly, because there is nothing else on the ring to distract from the centre stone. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, is the traditional choice and gives the warmest contrast against a colorless stone. White gold is the most neutral and lets the stone read as cool and bright. Rose gold gives a softer, more modern effect. For everyday wear 14K is harder and more scratch resistant than 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. A plain solitaire shank is the easiest of all designs to resize later, but ordering the correct size at the outset is always better. Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

Why choose a plain solitaire over a halo or pave ring?
A solitaire puts all the value into the centre stone rather than spreading it across many small ones, it never dates, and it is the easiest style to live with because there are no small stones to check or clean around.

How big does a 2 carat oval look?
An oval spreads more than a round of the same weight because the shape is elongated, so a 2 carat oval reads close to a 2.5 carat round face up. On a slim band like this one it looks larger still.

Will the four prongs hold a 5 carat stone securely?
Yes. We scale the prongs and the basket to the stone, so the 4 and 5 carat versions are built with heavier prongs than the 2 carat. The look stays the same but the structure is proportioned to the weight.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shank is plain and straight, so a straight wedding band sits flat against it. We can make a matching plain or pave band in the same metal.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating, so it cannot wear off or fade.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Pay attention to the underside of the oval, because on an open gallery that surface is exposed and collects lotion. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes ten to fourteen working days, plus shipping time. Every ring is cut and set only after it is ordered.
