Oval Moissanite Bezel Set Split Shank Engagement Ring

The band on this ring does not simply run into the setting. A short distance from the head it splits into two strands that open apart, curve around and rejoin at the base of the bezel, leaving a narrow gap you can see straight through. Above that sits a heavy full bezel wrapping the entire oval. The combination is unusual: a very protective, very solid setting carried on a shank that is deliberately open and light. Design and craftsmanship

Two things make this design demanding. First the bezel: an oval rim has to follow a curve that changes constantly, tight at the ends and shallow along the sides, and it is formed against the actual stone rather than a template so the fit is exact. Second the split: both strands have to leave the shank at the same point, open by the same amount and arrive at the bezel at the same height, or the gap between them will look crooked from above. Our goldsmiths cut and shape the split before the bezel is attached, then solder the collet across both strands so the join is hidden underneath. Every ring is finished by hand in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear, and a full bezel protects the girdle, the part of any stone most likely to chip. A bezel covers the outer edge of the stone so slightly less light enters from the sides, but moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond and still returns plenty of fire through the table. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, makes the most of a design that is mostly metal, and the open split reads clearly against the skin. Rose gold gives a warmer, softer version. White gold makes the bezel disappear so the oval outline dominates. 14K is the practical daily choice, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the style.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The lower half of the shank is a single plain band, so resizing is done there and never disturbs the split or the bezel.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

How is this different from your other bezel rings?
Our slim band bezel sits on a plain round wire and our wide band bezel sits on a 4 mm flat band. This one has a split shank, so the shoulders open apart before meeting the bezel and there is a visible gap on each side.

Why choose a bezel?
Nothing can bend or snag, the girdle is protected all the way round, and the ring sits flat against other rings. It is the setting we recommend most often for people who work with their hands.

Does the split shank make the ring weaker?
No. Two strands carry the load together and they rejoin at both ends, so the structure is sound. We do build the strands slightly thicker in silver, which is a softer metal.

Will a wedding band sit flush?
Mostly. The split strands sweep outward near the head, so a straight band meets the shank cleanly at the base but there may be a small gap higher up. A contoured band follows the curve exactly.

Does a bezel make the stone look smaller?
The rim covers a fraction of a millimetre of the outer edge. In yellow or rose gold the surrounding metal can also frame the stone and make it read larger from a distance.

Which centre size suits it?
All four. A larger stone gives a heavier bezel, which contrasts more strongly with the open split beneath it, so 4 and 5 carat are particularly striking.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working through the gap in the split shank where lotion collects. Rinse and pat dry. With no prongs or pave this ring is very easy to look after.

How long does it take to make?
