Oval Cut Lab Grown Diamond Vintage Ring with Hidden Halo on a Hand Engraved Milgrain Band

An oval cut lab grown diamond held by four claws above a hidden halo, on a band worked in the old way with hand engraving, milgrain edging and a pierced filigree gallery. The scrollwork is cut into the surface of the shank rather than cast into it, and the milgrain is a row of tiny beads run along both edges of the band with a knurling wheel, which is what gives an antique ring its soft outline instead of a hard machined edge. Look at the ring end on and the gallery under the stone is not solid metal. It is pierced into openwork so light passes right through the setting. This is the most labour intensive construction in the collection and it is the one that most closely follows early twentieth century workshop practice. E colour, VVS2 clarity, free IGI certificate. Band details

The shank carries hand engraved scrollwork along its face, framed by milgrain beading on both edges. Beneath the head the gallery is pierced into openwork rather than left solid. No pave is set into the band itself. The accent stones on this ring are all in the hidden halo under the centre.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Engraving and milgrain read most clearly in yellow and rose gold, where the cut lines catch shadow and the beading stands out against the warm surface. In white gold and sterling silver the effect is quieter and more silvery. If you would like the head finished in white metal against a yellow or rose gold band, as photographed, ask us and we will make it that way at no extra cost.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. Because the engraving and milgrain run around the shank, please order your correct size where possible. Resizing is still possible but the pattern has to be recut across the join. Ask us for a free size guide if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

What is milgrain?
A row of very small metal beads worked along the edge of a band with a knurling tool. It is a hallmark of Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery and it softens the outline of a ring, catching light along the rim in a way a plain polished edge does not.

What is a filigree gallery?
The gallery is the metal structure between the stone and the shank. Piercing it into openwork rather than leaving it solid lets light through from beneath and lightens the whole setting visually. It is cut by hand, which is why it takes longer to make.

Is hand engraving durable?
Yes. The pattern is cut into the metal itself, not applied to the surface, so it does not wear off. Over many years the high points soften slightly, which is generally considered part of the appeal of an engraved ring.

What is a hidden halo?
A ring of small pave set diamonds around the collar beneath the centre stone, facing outward. It is invisible from the front and appears only in profile or as the hand moves.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. Same carbon structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.

Do I get a certificate?
Yes. A free IGI certificate for the centre stone comes with every order, listing colour, clarity, cut grade and carat weight.
