A tapered baguette is a long step cut rectangle with one end narrower than the other, and it is the most architectural side stone in jewellery. Set as they are here, wide end inward and narrow end outward, the two baguettes form a pair of wedges that appear to spring from beneath the oval and run away across the finger, which stretches the head considerably without adding a single extra outline for the eye to read. The stones are bar set rather than claw set. A slim upright bar of metal stands at each outer end and the inner ends tuck under the centre claws, so nothing interrupts the long top edge of the baguette and the step cut facets run uninterrupted from the oval to the shoulder. That matters because a step cut has no sparkle to hide a claw behind. Any metal crossing its table shows as a hard line. The optical pairing is deliberate. What is a tapered baguette
