An oval cut lab grown diamond in four claws on a plain polished band that narrows as it rises toward the head. Nothing is set into the shank and there is no halo. The only shaping in the ring is the taper, and it is there for a reason.

A band of even width running straight into a large centre stone gives the eye a constant measure to compare the diamond against, and the stone loses some of its scale as a result. Narrowing the shank at the shoulders removes that reference. The metal is at its thinnest exactly where it meets the stone, so the oval appears to sit on almost nothing, while the base of the band stays full width and keeps the strength where the ring actually takes wear. It is the oldest trick in solitaire design and still the most effective.

The shank is full width at the base and tapers gradually through the shoulders to its narrowest point at the head. It is polished to a mirror finish, rounded on the inside for comfort and left completely plain, which makes it easy to resize, easy to engrave and easy to pair with any wedding band you choose later.

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is shown here and gives the classic warm contrast against a white diamond. Rose gold reads softer and more contemporary. White gold and sterling silver let the metal fall away visually so the oval is the only thing the eye registers.

Why is the band tapered?
Because a shank that narrows toward the head removes the visual reference the eye uses to judge the size of the stone. The diamond looks larger and appears to float, while the base of the band stays full width for strength.

Does an oval look bigger than a round diamond?
Yes. An oval spreads the same carat weight over a longer surface, so it shows a larger face on the hand, and the elongated shape makes the finger look slimmer.

What is a bow tie in an oval diamond?
It is a dark band across the middle of the stone caused by the way light is blocked in a poorly proportioned cut. Every oval has some, but an excellent make like the one used here keeps it faint enough not to be noticeable.

Is a plain band a good long term choice?
It is the most practical one. A plain shank can be resized without limit, repolished when it marks, and restyled later if you ever want pave or a different head, none of which is straightforward on a stone set band.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure, hardness, refractive index and fire as a mined diamond. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled environment rather than pulled from the ground.
