Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%An oval cut lab grown diamond held by four broad flat tabs of metal rather than by rounded prongs, set as low as the stone will go, with no basket beneath it, on a slim tapered polished shank.
The claws are the entire design. A conventional prong is a round wire that is bent over the girdle and finished as a small bead, and four of them are what almost every solitaire uses. These are different. Each one is a wide flat tab, rectangular in section with a squared end, folded over the girdle so it presents a broad flat plane against the stone instead of a point. That changes the ring in three ways. It grips a much longer arc of the girdle than a bead ever does, which matters on a long stone like an oval where the ends are the vulnerable part. It reads as architecture rather than as jewellery hardware, because four clean rectangles of gold against a diamond is a graphic statement instead of a decorative one. And it lets the setting sit lower, because there is no basket at all. The tabs rise directly out of the shank and there is no collar, no gallery rail and no legs underneath, so the pavilion drops into the space between the shoulders and the stone sits almost against the finger. The shank tapers slightly to the palm and is otherwise completely plain.
A slim polished shank, tapering slightly towards the palm, with the four tabs rising directly out of it. No basket, collar or gallery rail beneath the stone. The interior is smooth and comfort rounded.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is fully hallmarked. Yellow gold is shown in the photographs, where the four flat tabs read as clear blocks of warm metal against the stone. In white gold they almost disappear.
The ring is made to your finger size. Select your size at checkout. If you are unsure, we will send you a printable size guide before we begin work.
We can change the carat weight, use six tabs instead of four, narrow the tabs, add a hidden halo beneath the stone, widen the shank, or make a matching plain wedding band that sits flush against it. Write to us through https://mapplegems.com/pages/contact and our workshop will prepare a quotation and a rendering before any metal is cut.
Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.
Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.
What is a tab claw
A wide flat rectangle of metal folded over the girdle, rather than a round wire finished as a bead. It presents a flat plane against the stone and grips a much longer arc of the girdle.
Are flat tabs more secure than ordinary prongs
They hold more of the girdle, which is an advantage on a long stone like an oval where the two ends are most exposed. They are also thicker in section, so there is more metal to wear through before anything loosens.
Why is there no basket
Removing it lets the pavilion drop between the shoulders so the stone sits as low as possible. A low ring does not catch on clothing, does not lean on the finger and stacks cleanly with a wedding band.
Do the tabs cover much of the diamond
They cover slightly more of the girdle than a bead prong, but they sit flat and low against the outline rather than standing over the crown, so the face of the stone stays fully open.
How is this different from your other low set solitaires
One uses fine claws on a wide flat squared band, one uses split shoulders feeding a trellis. This one has no basket at all and four wide flat tabs doing all of the work.
Can this ring be resized
Yes, comfortably. The shank is plain with nothing set into it.
How long does the ring take to make
Fourteen to eighteen working days before dispatch.
There is no ornament here to carry the ring, no accents and not even a basket, so the diamond is the only thing being looked at. Lab grown material is how an E colour VVS2 oval of two to five carats with excellent cut and polish sits this exposed at this price, with a traceable origin and no mining.
