Oval Cut Lab Grown Diamond Ring on a Knife Edge Band with Engraved Scrollwork

An oval cut lab grown diamond in four claws over a milgrain edged collar, on a band cut to a raised central ridge with both sloping faces hand engraved in deep acanthus scroll and milgrained along every edge.

A knife edge shank is triangular in section. It rises to a ridge along the centre line of the finger and falls away to a face on each side, and that geometry is what makes it the hardest band to engrave well. On a flat band the graver runs across one plane. Here it has to work two planes that meet at an angle, and the scroll on each face has to resolve into the ridge without the pattern breaking where the two sides meet. Done properly the ridge reads as a bright line of unengraved gold running the whole way round with dense carved ornament falling away below it on both sides, which is why a knife edge catches light so much harder than a round band. Every edge on the ring is then milgrained, the two outer edges of the shank, both sides of the ridge and the collar around the stone, so the whole piece is bounded by fine beading rather than by cut lines. The head itself sits on a low milgrained collar with four plain claws, and it is kept deliberately simple, because a decorated head on top of this much shank ornament would leave the eye nowhere to settle.

Band details

The shank is knife edged, rising to a raised central ridge with a sloping face on each side. Both faces are hand engraved in deep acanthus scroll and every edge carries milgrain beading. The ridge itself is left plain and polished. The interior is smooth and comfort rounded.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is fully hallmarked. Yellow gold is shown in the photographs, where the polished ridge reads as a bright line against the shadowed engraving below it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

What is a knife edge band
A shank cut to a triangular section so it rises to a ridge along the centre of the finger and slopes away on both sides. It catches light far harder than a round or flat band because the ridge presents a continuous bright line.

Why is engraving a knife edge harder
Because the graver has to work two sloping planes that meet at an angle, and the scroll on each face must resolve into the ridge without the pattern breaking where the sides meet.

How is this different from your other engraved rings
Our cathedral engraved ring uses a flat faced shank, and our filigree ring uses a wide flat band. This one is engraved on the two sloping faces of a knife edge, which is the most demanding of the three to cut.

Will the engraving wear away
Slowly, and mainly on the palm side. We recut and sharpen it during servicing whenever you want it refreshed.

Can this ring be resized
Within about one size. Larger changes break the continuity of the scroll and the ridge, so we prefer to remake the shank and re-engrave it.

How long does the ring take to make
Two engraved faces plus milgrain on six separate edges, all cut by hand, so allow twenty two to twenty six working days before dispatch.

This is a ring priced largely in bench hours, and lab grown material means paying for that engraving does not force a smaller or lower graded centre stone. An E colour VVS2 oval of two to five carats sits above the scrollwork, with a traceable origin and no mining.
