The head is doing something structurally different from a normal four claw setting. In most rings each claw is a single post running from the collar down to the shank. Here each one forks partway down into two separate legs that meet the band at two points instead of one. It looks like a small detail from above and it changes the ring completely from the side, because the gallery becomes a series of open triangles rather than four straight posts, and the head appears to grow out of the band rather than being planted on top of it. It is also the stronger arrangement. A forked leg resists twisting in a way a single post cannot, which matters most on a long oval where any rotation of the head shows up immediately against the line of the finger. The hidden halo runs the full oval outline around the collar, not just a short block under the middle, so the flash of small stones is visible from every side.
