An oval cut lab grown diamond in four claws on a cathedral shank whose flat outer face is hand engraved with a running scroll and bordered on both edges with fine milgrain beading.

This is a vintage ring made the way vintage rings were actually made, which is with a graver rather than a casting mould. The shank is formed with a flat face rather than a round one, because scrollwork needs a plane to sit on, and that flat face is then cut by hand with a burin. The scroll is a continuous curling vine that runs from the head down each shoulder, and the cuts are made at an angle so one wall of every line catches light and the other stays dark. That is the whole trick of hand engraving, and it is why an engraved band still reads clearly from a distance while a stamped pattern goes flat. Both edges of the face carry milgrain, a row of tiny beads raised from the metal with a knurling wheel and then burnished. Milgrain has a practical job as well as a decorative one, since a beaded edge hides the small scratches that a flat polished edge would show. The shoulders rise into a cathedral arch that carries the head above the finger, and even the inside faces of those arches are engraved, which is a detail almost nobody sees but everybody notices in the photographs.

Band details

The shank has a flat outer face carrying a hand engraved running scroll, bordered on both edges by fine milgrain. The shoulders rise in a cathedral arch to the head and are engraved on their inner faces as well. The inside of the shank is smooth and comfort rounded.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is fully hallmarked. Yellow gold is shown in the photographs, where the engraving casts the strongest shadow.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

Is the engraving cut by hand or stamped
Cut by hand with a graver after casting. Each cut is angled so one wall reflects and the other shadows, which is what gives hand engraving its depth. No two rings are identical.

What is milgrain
A border of tiny raised beads worked along the edge of the band with a knurling wheel. It softens the edge, adds an antique character and disguises the light surface scratches that plain edges show.

Will the engraving wear away
Very slowly, and only on the part of the band that faces the palm. We recut and sharpen the engraving during servicing whenever you want it refreshed.

Why is there a cathedral arch at the shoulders
It raises the head above the finger so the oval sits proud, and it gives the engraved shoulders more surface to be seen from the side.

Can this ring be resized
Within about one size. Larger changes interrupt the scroll pattern, so we prefer to remake the shank and re-engrave it so the design stays continuous.

How long does the ring take to make
Each ring is cast, engraved and milgrained by hand to order, so allow eighteen to twenty two working days before dispatch.
