Fishtail is the name for the way the metal is cut around each accent. Instead of pushing small beads over the edge of a flat seat, the setter cuts a V shaped notch into the side wall of the shank on either side of every stone, then works the metal that remains between the notches down over the girdle. Seen from above, the little wings of metal left standing either side of each diamond splay outward like a tail, which is where the name comes from. The technique matters for two reasons. It removes far more metal from beside each stone than bead setting does, so light reaches the accents from the side rather than only from directly above, and it leaves a scalloped edge along the shank rather than a straight one, which catches light along its whole length even when the stones themselves are in shadow. The result on a fine band like this is a row of accents that stays bright at every angle rather than going flat when the hand turns away from the light. Under the head the gallery is left completely plain and open, with no hidden halo, so the pavilion of the oval is exposed and nothing reflects into it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

What is fishtail pave
A setting style where V shaped notches are cut into the side of the shank either side of each stone, leaving small splayed wings of metal that hold the diamond. It removes more metal than bead setting, so light reaches the stones from the side.

How is it different from ordinary pave
Ordinary bead set pave sits in a flat seat with small beads pushed over the edge, and the shank keeps a straight side. Fishtail leaves a scalloped edge that catches light along its whole length.

Why is there no hidden halo
Because this design is meant to leave the stone alone. A halo of any kind reflects light into the pavilion and slightly changes what you see. Here the oval is presented on its own.

Will the pave stones come loose
Fishtail is one of the more secure pave methods because the metal is worked over the girdle rather than pushed as small beads. We check and tighten every setting free of charge for life.

Can this ring be resized
Within about two sizes using the plain section at the palm.

How long does the ring take to make
Each fishtail notch is cut individually before the stone goes in, so allow eighteen to twenty two working days before dispatch.
