An oval cut lab grown diamond held by six bead tipped claws on a wide flat band cut with a deep filigree scroll and edged on both sides with milgrain, the engraving carried around the shoulders and onto the inner faces of the shank.

The engraving on this band is cut deeper and more openly than on most engraved rings, which changes what it does. A shallow scroll reads as texture. Cut this deep, with real shadow inside each curl, it reads as pierced work, and from a metre away the band looks like a lace ribbon rather than a decorated bar of gold. It is worked with a graver in the traditional way, each cut angled so one wall of the line takes light and the other holds shadow, and because it is cut rather than moulded the pattern varies slightly from ring to ring. The band is flat topped rather than round, because a scroll needs a plane to live on, and it is noticeably wider than a plain solitaire shank so there is room for the pattern to develop rather than being squeezed into a strip. Both edges carry milgrain, a row of tiny beads worked with a knurling wheel, which softens the hard edge of a flat band and hides the fine scratches that a polished edge would show. The six claws holding the oval are each finished with a small bead at the tip, so the head belongs to the same beaded vocabulary as the edges of the band.

The shank is flat topped and wider than a plain solitaire band, hand engraved with a deep open filigree scroll and edged both sides with milgrain. The engraving continues around the shoulders and onto the inner faces of the shank. The inside surface against the finger is smooth and comfort rounded.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is fully hallmarked. Yellow gold is shown in the photographs, where the depth of the engraving casts the strongest shadow.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

Is the filigree cut by hand or cast
Cast first, then cut by hand with a graver. The angled cuts and the depth of the shadow inside each curl are what separate hand cutting from a moulded pattern, and they are why no two rings are identical.

What is milgrain
A border of tiny raised beads worked along the edge of the band. It softens a flat edge, gives an antique character and disguises light surface scratches.

Why is the band wider than usual
Because the scroll needs room. Compressed onto a narrow shank the pattern becomes a smudge rather than a legible design.

Will the engraving wear away
Only slowly, and only where the ring faces the palm. We recut and sharpen it during servicing whenever you want it refreshed.

Can this ring be resized
Within about one size. Larger changes break the continuity of the scroll, so we prefer to remake the shank and re-engrave it.

How long does the ring take to make
The engraving and milgrain are cut by hand, so allow eighteen to twenty two working days before dispatch.
