Splitting a claw is a quiet piece of engineering. A single claw of the thickness needed to hold a five carat oval securely covers a noticeable amount of the stone, and on a curved edge it also has only one point of contact, which is where wear concentrates. Divide the same claw into two slimmer tips and the grip is spread over two points instead of one, the pressure on each is halved, and the pair together cover less of the diamond than the single claw they replaced. You get a more secure hold and less visible metal from the same amount of gold.

Band details

The shank is slim and rounded, pave set along its upper length and plain at the base. It rises gently into the basket so the split claws sit at the right height to grip the widest part of the oval, which is where a claw holds a curved stone most securely.

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White gold is shown here and it makes the split tips almost invisible against the diamond, which is the point of using them. Yellow and rose gold show each pair of tips as small warm marks along the edge of the stone, which some people prefer because it reveals how the ring is built.

What is a split claw?
A claw that divides into two slimmer tips where it meets the stone. The grip is spread over two points rather than one, the pressure on each is lower, and less metal covers the diamond than a single claw of the same strength would.

Are split claws more secure?
They spread the load better, which is an advantage on a curved stone like an oval and on larger carat weights. As with any claw setting we recommend a check every couple of years.

What is a concealed halo?
A ring of small diamonds set around the basket beneath the centre stone. Invisible from above so the ring keeps a solitaire outline, visible as a line of light from the side.

Does an oval look bigger than a round diamond?
Yes. An oval spreads the same carat weight over a longer surface, so it shows a larger face on the hand, and its elongated outline lengthens the finger.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure, hardness, refractive index and fire as a mined diamond. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled environment rather than pulled from the ground.

Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included with every order at no additional cost.

Can this ring be resized?
Yes. The base of the shank is left free of stones for exactly that purpose.
