Built for wearing, not for storing

Most large engagement rings ask something of you. Claws catch on jumpers, high settings snag in pockets, and a stone set point upward has an edge waiting to be knocked. Here the metal wraps the two ends of the oval and the profile stays low, so there is nothing standing proud of the stone. People who cook, garden, work with children or type all day tend to end up in a setting like this one.

Why the wrap is only at the ends

Enclosing the whole stone would hide the long edges of the oval, which is where its spread shows. Wrapping only the two ends keeps the stone as secure as a full bezel while leaving the width completely open. The rails are shaped to the curve of your particular stone.

The light underneath

A hidden halo of small round diamonds sits around the outside of the basket, below the girdle. It does nothing from directly above, which is the point. From any other angle it fills the space between the stone and the finger with light, so a low setting does not read as a heavy one.

The thin band

A narrow shank makes the stone look larger, because there is nothing beside it to measure against. It also stacks properly. Since the oval runs across the finger rather than down it, a straight wedding band sits flat against this ring with no curve or notch needed, which is not true of most large solitaires.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here. On a thin band that will be worn constantly we would point you towards 10K or 14K, which are harder alloys and hold their shape better than 18K. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The hidden halo diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A wrapped setting keeps dirt out far better than claws, so the main job is brushing up into the basket to keep the hidden halo bright. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The hidden halo stones are matched to the same grade.

Is this secure enough for daily wear at 5 carat? Yes. A wrapped setting is the most secure way to hold a large stone, and the low profile means it takes fewer knocks in the first place.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, unusually well, because the stone runs across the finger. A plain straight band meets it cleanly on both sides.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band carries no stones, so resizing does not touch the setting.
