Alternating two shapes along a shank is an old jeweller's device for making a narrow band look busier than it is. The reason it works is arithmetic. A marquise laid lengthwise covers around three times the length of a round of the same width, so a run made only of marquise stones needs very few of them and the band looks sparse, while a run made only of rounds needs many and the band looks like a plain pave line. Alternating the two gives you a long stone, then a short one, then a long one, and the eye reads the change in rhythm as detail rather than counting stones. It also solves a practical problem. The narrow tips of the marquise are the most vulnerable points on any accent stone, and here each tip sits directly against a round, whose curved girdle acts as a buffer and takes the knock first.
