An oval cut lab grown diamond held in a trellis setting on a plain slim band. From above this is as simple as a solitaire gets, four claws around an oval and nothing else on the ring at all. The whole of the design is underneath. In a trellis the claws do not rise straight out of a basket, they sweep up from the shank and cross over one another beneath the stone, so the gallery is an open woven lattice rather than a plain cage. It is more work than a standard four claw head and it lets the oval sit lower, because the crossing arms brace against each other instead of needing a tall basket for rigidity. The trellis is pure metalwork, so it reads most clearly in yellow or rose gold where the crossing arms show as distinct woven lines under the stone. White gold makes the whole setting recede. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and keeps crossing claw arms rigid.

Frequently asked questions

What is a trellis setting?
A setting in which the claws sweep up from the shank and cross over one another under the stone, forming a woven lattice instead of a plain basket. It is visible mainly from beneath and from the side.

Does a trellis hold more securely?
At least as well as a basket. The crossing arms brace against each other, which adds rigidity and lets the stone sit slightly lower than a raised basket would.

Why does it matter if it is only visible underneath?
Because you see it every time you take the ring off. A finished gallery is the traditional mark of a ring made properly all the way round rather than only where it shows.

Does an oval look bigger than a round of the same weight?
Generally yes. An oval spreads its weight across a longer surface, presenting more face up area than a round of identical carat, and the elongated outline flatters the finger.

Is this easy to pair with a wedding band?
Yes. The shank is plain and straight where a band meets it, with no pave to line up, and the trellis lets the head sit low.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. Same carbon structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.
