Why pears next to an oval

A three stone ring with two rounds beside an oval looks neat but static. Pears change that. Their points run out along the finger and their rounded ends tuck against the oval, so the outline flows from one stone into the next. It is the difference between three stones in a row and one continuous shape.

Set close, with no gaps

The side stones sit right up against the centre. Leaving a gap is easier to make and it is the first thing that gives a three stone ring away as cheaply built, because daylight between the stones breaks the line. Each pear is cut to a size that suits the particular centre stone rather than picked from a stock tray, so the proportions stay right whether you order two carat or five.

The claws

The oval is held in four claws placed at the sides rather than at the tips, where an oval is thinnest. Each pear has a V claw over its point and two claws on the rounded end. All of them are filed low so the metal does not intrude on the stones from above.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both pear side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters on a three stone ring because the side stones sit close enough for any difference in colour to show.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are laid out and checked together before any metal is cut, so the tops sit level and the pears mirror each other. The shank is tapered so it disappears under the stones rather than competing with them. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working between the stones where they meet, which is where a three stone ring collects the most. The points of the pears are the vulnerable parts, so take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and both pear side stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The two pears are in addition, and they are sized in proportion to whichever centre you choose.

How wide does it sit on the finger? Wider than a solitaire of the same centre weight, because the pears extend outward. On a 2 carat centre the three stones together cover most of the width of an average finger.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not quite. The pear points sit low and close to the finger, so a straight band meets them. A band with a shallow curve clears them, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
