Three ovals, graduated

The two side stones are cut to roughly the same proportions as the centre, so all three read as one family rather than a centre stone with two afterthoughts. They are set upright, standing the same way as the centre, which gives the ring a row of three arches across the finger. Turn the side stones sideways and the design changes completely, so we do not.

Matching the outline is the difficult part

Ovals vary. Two stones of the same carat weight can have quite different length to width ratios, and a side oval that is rounder or longer than the centre is obvious the moment you look down at your hand. We select all three stones together, matching the ratio as well as the colour, which is slower than picking the sides from a tray and is the reason the ring looks right.

The claws

Four claws on the centre, placed at the sides where an oval is strongest rather than at the tips where it is thinnest. Four on each side stone as well, filed low so they do not break the outline. Nothing sits between the stones, so the three ovals touch and the row is unbroken.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both side ovals are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are laid out and measured together before any metal is cut, and the heads are built to bring all three tops to the same height. The shank tapers from the shoulders so the metal narrows as it approaches the stones. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the two joins where the stones meet. Ovals are relatively tough but the tips are the thinnest points, so take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and both side ovals are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The two side ovals are in addition and are sized in proportion to the centre.

Why three ovals instead of an oval with rounds? Repeating the shape keeps the ring quiet and formal, and it makes the whole row look like one continuous shape. Rounds beside an oval give more contrast but less flow. It is a matter of taste rather than quality.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, close to it. All three stones sit at the same height and the shank is plain, so a straight band meets it with only a small gap under the centre.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
