Why pear side stones

A pear has a rounded shoulder and a single point. Set with the point outwards, the two pears carry the eye along the finger and make the whole cluster read longer than the centre stone alone. They also echo the oval's curve, so the three stones look like one continuous shape rather than three separate diamonds sitting in a row. Round side stones would look neat. Pears look intentional.

The meaning people give it

Three stone rings are usually read as past, present and future, which is why they are chosen as often for anniversaries as for engagements. We make no claims about symbolism, but it is the most common reason customers give us for wanting this layout.

Total diamond weight

The carat option you choose applies to the centre oval. The two pears are cut to stay in proportion with it, so a 2 carat centre carries smaller pears than a 5 carat centre, and the ring keeps its balance at every size.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is the traditional choice for a trilogy and is what is shown here. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Matching a pair of pears to an individual oval is a sorting job as much as a setting job, and it is done by eye at the bench. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work the brush into the gap between the centre stone and each pear. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pear side stones are matched to the same grade.

Are the pear points protected? Yes. The point of each pear sits inside a v shaped claw, which is the standard way to guard the most fragile part of a pear cut.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The side stones sit above band height, so a straight band tucks underneath them neatly. Many customers wear this one with a plain band.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band carries no stones at all, so it is straightforward to size up or down.
