Three ovals in a row

Most three stone rings pair a centre stone with a different shape at the sides, which creates contrast. Repeating the same shape does the opposite: the eye reads one long continuous run of diamond across the finger, and the ring looks considerably wider than the centre stone alone.

Set level, not stepped

All three tables finish at the same height. That takes more work at the bench, because the three stones have different depths and each needs its own seat, but it is what makes the row read as a single object rather than a large stone with two smaller ones bolted beside it.

What three stones traditionally mean

Past, present and future. It is a Victorian idea rather than an ancient one, but it has stuck, and it is why the three stone ring remains the most common alternative to a solitaire for an engagement.

On the bow tie

Every oval carries a faint dark band across its centre, caused by the way facets shadow themselves in an elongated brilliant. With three ovals side by side a mismatch is obvious, so all three are selected together and any stone with a pronounced bow tie is rejected.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and in white metal in one image, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both side ovals are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The side stones are cut to proportions that suit the centre rather than picked from stock, and all three are set together so the tops finish level and the gaps stay even. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing behind all three stones and into the two joins. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? All three ovals are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The two side ovals are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and the stones sit above it, so a straight band meets it cleanly on either side.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have larger side stones? Yes. Tell us the proportions you want and we will quote it; some people prefer the three closer in size, which makes a bolder ring.
