Every stone is the same shape and the same cut, which is rarer than it sounds and much harder to source. The result is a three stone ring that reads as one flowing cluster rather than a centre stone with accessories.

Why matching ovals are harder

Pear or trillion side stones only have to complement the centre. Oval side stones have to match it, in outline, in length to width ratio and in the way the bow tie shadow falls across the middle of the stone. Get that wrong and one of the three looks off. We sort the sides to the centre by eye, which is why this design is made to order rather than kept in stock.

How it wears

Because all three stones are elongated and set in a gentle arc, the cluster covers more of the finger than its carat weight suggests and follows the curve of the knuckle rather than sitting flat on top of it. The band is kept fine and plain so it disappears under the stones.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold, as photographed, keeps the ring warm and slightly vintage. White gold or silver pushes all the attention onto the three stones. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three baskets are built as one unit so the stones sit at exactly the same height, then the claws are cut and tightened individually. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush between the stones, where three settings meet and dirt likes to sit. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The oval side stones are matched to the same grade.

Do the side stones grow with the carat option? Yes. They are scaled to the centre, so a 5 carat version has visibly larger sides than a 2 carat one and the proportions stay right.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The side stones sit slightly above the band, so a straight band tucks under them. A curved band sits perfectly flush if you prefer no gap at all.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank carries no stones.
