Half moons, not trillions

The usual three stone ring uses triangles or tapered baguettes at the sides. Half moons are harder to cut and harder to match, because the straight edge has to follow the curve of the centre stone exactly. Done properly, as here, the join between the three is almost closed and the eye reads a single wide oval rather than three separate diamonds.

Three stones, one line

Everything sits at the same height. There is no raised centre and no drop to the sides, so the top of the ring is a flat, wide surface that spans the finger. It is why a three stone of this kind looks larger on the hand than its carat weight suggests.

The oval cut

A brilliant cut stretched into an ellipse. It carries the fire of a round while covering more of the finger, and the slight taper at each end lines up naturally with the flat edge of a half moon.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The two half moons are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The half moons are cut to the centre stone rather than picked from stock, which is the only way to close the gaps between them, and all three are set together so the tops finish level. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing behind all three stones and into the joins between them. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and both half moons are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The half moons are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and tapered, so a straight band meets it cleanly on either side.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have a different centre shape with half moon sides? Yes. Emerald, radiant and elongated cushion all work well between half moons. Tell us when you order.
