Set on the diagonal

The oval sits neither upright along the finger nor flat across it, but at an angle between the two. That tilt is what lets the swirl pass behind the stone without crowding it, and it gives the ring an off centre balance that reads as designed rather than accidental. Worn, the stone points across the back of the hand.

Where the accents go

The two pears are not on the shoulders in the usual way. They fill the hollows where the swirl changes direction, one above the oval and one below, pointing outward along the line of the curve. Putting them there means the metal never looks empty and the eye travels around the ring instead of stopping dead at the centre.

Three brilliants, one rhythm

The oval and both pears are brilliant cut, so all three scatter light the same way. What separates them is size and direction, not behaviour, which is what keeps a busy design from looking like a cluster of unrelated stones.

The points are guarded

Each pear tip sits inside a claw that wraps the two edges meeting at the point rather than pressing down on it, and both accents are angled so their points follow the curve of the metal rather than standing proud of it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and on a design where the polished sweep of metal is half the ring, the alloy matters: 10K holds a polish hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K gives the deepest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both pear accents are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

About the bow tie

Every oval and every pear can show a bow tie, a dark band across the middle of the stone caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We check all three stones by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The swirl is formed and polished before any stone goes near it, since a curve like this cannot be corrected afterwards, and the diagonal angle of the oval is set to your particular stone. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work into the hollows where the pears sit and along the inside of the curve behind the oval. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pear accents are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The two pear accents are in addition and are scaled to suit the centre you choose.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? No, not flat. The swirl crosses the band at an angle. A curved or open band nests against it, or wear this ring alone.

Can it be resized? Only slightly, because the curve is formed to a specific finger size. Please measure carefully and we will build to your size.

Does it sit high on the finger? Higher than a plain solitaire but not dramatically. The stones sit within the sweep of the band rather than lifted above it.
