What the split does

Where a plain shank would run straight into the setting, this one opens into two arms with a slim opening between them. It lifts the stone, gives the ring a defined shoulder line, and lets light pass under the setting from the sides. From above you barely notice it; in profile it is the whole character of the ring.

Cathedral, without the weight

A traditional cathedral setting uses solid metal arches rising to the stone, which can look heavy. Splitting the shank achieves the same lift with far less metal, so the ring keeps the lightness of a plain band while gaining the structure of a cathedral.

The oval cut

A brilliant cut stretched into an ellipse, carrying the fire of a round while covering more of the finger. Every oval has a faint bow tie across its centre, and we reject stones where it is pronounced, which matters here because nothing in this setting distracts from the stone.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. With no accents anywhere, that report describes the entire ring.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The split is cut and filed by hand so both arms match and the opening between them stays even, then the whole shank is polished as one surface. The claws are fitted last, to the measured stone. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the stone and through the opening in the shank. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is a split shank weaker than a solid one? No. The two arms rejoin under the setting and brace each other, and the shank is solid all the way round the back where the ring takes most of its wear.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, against the plain back and sides. The split is confined to the area just below the stone.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is single. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have a hidden halo added? Yes. The split shank leaves good access beneath the setting, so we can fit one either now or later.
