One piece of metal, no joins

The curve is not two halves soldered either side of a setting. The band is formed as one continuous length, thickening where it has to hold the stone and thinning as it returns to the finger. That is why the line stays unbroken from any angle, and why the ring reads as a sculpture rather than as a mounting on a band.

How it sits on the hand

Because the band sweeps sideways, the oval sits slightly off the straight line of the finger and tilts with the curve. It looks intentional on the hand in a way a symmetrical solitaire does not, and it is one of the few settings that flatters being worn on the middle finger as readily as the third.

The oval cut

A brilliant cut stretched into an ellipse. Its long soft outline follows the sweep of the band instead of fighting it, which is exactly why this shape was chosen for this setting rather than a round.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed mostly in yellow gold, which shows the curve best, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. A curved band like this is shaped by hand against a former, then filed and polished along its whole length, because any flat spot in the sweep is visible immediately. The claws are the last thing fitted. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, following the curve on both sides and brushing behind the stone. There is nothing enclosed on this ring, so it cleans easily. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit against it? Not flush, because the band is curved where it meets the finger. Most people wear this ring alone, which is how it was designed. If you want a band with it, we will shape one to follow the curve.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is at its plainest, though the curve limits how far we can go. One size either way is safe, and beyond that we would rather remake it.

Is a curved band comfortable? Yes. The part that touches the finger is a normal round section; only the upper half of the ring sweeps.

Can I have a different stone shape in this setting? A pear or a marquise follows the curve just as well as an oval. Tell us when you order.
