A wide ribbon, not a shank

The metal here is flat and broad rather than round, so it catches light as a surface instead of a line. It rises on one side of the stone, curls over, and falls away on the other, which gives the ring a clear front and back and makes it look different from every angle. Nothing about it is symmetrical, and that is the point.

The half bezel

Metal wraps the two long sides of the oval and leaves the ends open, so the outline of the stone stays visible while the vulnerable girdle is covered. On a ribbon this wide a full bezel would have swallowed the diamond; a half bezel lets the stone read as separate from the metal holding it.

Why an oval

An oval spreads its weight along the finger rather than down into the stone, so it covers more of the hand per carat than a round and its long axis follows the direction the ribbon is already travelling. A 2 carat oval here measures roughly 9 by 6.5 millimetres, a 5 carat closer to 13.5 by 9.5.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. All three golds are photographed here. On a ring where a broad polished surface is most of what you see, the alloy matters: 10K holds a polish hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K gives the deepest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

About the bow tie

Every oval can show a bow tie, a dark band across the middle of the stone caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it, and with no accent stones on this ring nothing distracts from it. We check every oval by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The ribbon is formed, filed and polished before the stone goes near it, because a broad curve like this shows every correction, and the half bezel is closed onto your particular oval by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Clean along both open ends of the bezel and under the sweep of the ribbon. There is no pave and there are no claws, so the rest is simple. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? No, not flat. The ribbon changes height and width as it travels. Most people wear this ring on its own.

Can it be resized? Only slightly, since the sweep is formed to a specific finger size and altering it distorts the curve. Please measure carefully and we will build to your size.

Is a half bezel secure? Yes. It covers the girdle along both long sides, which is where an oval is most at risk, and there are no claws to bend or wear thin.

Does it catch on clothing? The edges are rounded and polished and nothing projects above the stone, so no more than a plain solitaire does.
