Pear accents, pointing out

Most side stones are round or tapered. Pears have a direction, and set with their points turned away from the centre stone they stretch the design outward along the finger, which makes the whole ring read longer. Turned the other way they would crowd the oval.

Rounds in the gaps

Where the curve of a pear meets the curve of the centre stone there is a small triangular space. Filling it with a round accent closes the outline, so the group reads as one continuous shape rather than three separate stones with metal showing between them.

The oval cut

A brilliant cut stretched into an ellipse. Every oval carries a faint bow tie across its centre, caused by the way facets shadow themselves in an elongated brilliant; we reject stones where it is pronounced, which matters here because the centre stone is clearly the largest thing on the ring.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and in white metal in two images, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The pear accents are cut to suit the centre stone rather than chosen from stock, since their length depends on how elongated the oval is, and the rounds are set last to close the gaps exactly. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside other rings. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working between the accents from underneath. The points of the pear accents are their thinnest parts, so avoid knocks. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The pear and round accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Is this a three stone ring? Not quite. The pears are accents rather than equal partners, and there are rounds between them, so it reads as a cluster rather than a true three stone.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Close. The accents rise where they meet the band, so a slightly shaped band sits tighter, and we will make one to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
