A halo with points

Instead of a continuous row of small rounds, this halo alternates marquises set pointing outward with rounds filling the spaces between them. The outline becomes a star rather than a ring, and because marquises are longer than they are wide, the border reaches further out than a conventional halo of the same weight.

Deliberately antique

Starburst and cluster halos of this kind belong to the Georgian and early Victorian tradition, long before micro pave existed. The effect is ornate and hand made rather than sleek, and it is considerably less common than a plain halo.

The centre stays an oval

The accents sit clear of the centre stone rather than crowding its girdle, so the oval is still clearly readable as an oval within the starburst. That is the difference between a halo ring and a cluster where the centre stone disappears.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the antique character, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Every marquise in the halo is seated at its own angle around the measured centre stone, and the rounds are set last to close the gaps. It takes far longer than a conventional halo, and it is why the ring looks made rather than manufactured. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the halo from underneath between the points. An ornate halo collects more than a plain one, so clean it weekly. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo and pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. All accents are in addition, and on this design they add a considerable amount of diamond.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Do the marquise points catch? They sit within the outline of the halo rather than standing proud of it, so no more than a conventional halo does.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not completely, since the halo is wider than the band. A shaped band follows the starburst, and we will make one to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
