A halo of separate stones

A modern halo uses very small stones packed tight so the border disappears into a line of light. This one uses considerably larger stones, each with its own claws and a visible gap of metal between, so you can count them. The effect is Georgian and Victorian rather than modern, and the scalloped outline is where the flower comparison comes from.

Why larger halo stones change the ring

Small pave halo stones make a centre diamond look bigger. Large individually set ones do something different: they make the ring look like a cluster, where the centre stone is the largest of a group rather than a solitaire with a border. It is a bolder, more antique effect and much less common.

The gallery underneath

Look at the profile photographs and you will see the claws of the halo stones fanning out beneath the setting like the ribs of an umbrella. That structure is visible on the hand from the side, and it is part of the design rather than something hidden.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the antique character, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The halo diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters more here than with pave because each one is large enough to judge by eye.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Every halo stone is given its own seat and claws and spaced by hand around the measured centre stone, which takes far longer than cutting a continuous halo seat. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working between the halo stones and up into the gallery from below. An open halo like this rinses cleaner than tight pave. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every halo stone are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The halo diamonds are in addition, and on this design they add a noticeable amount of diamond.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

How is this different from a normal halo? The stones are much larger and individually claw set, so the border is scalloped and countable rather than a smooth line of small stones.

Will a wedding band sit flush? The halo overhangs the band, so a straight band leaves a small gap. A shaped band tucks under the scallops, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
