Oval Cut Lab Grown Diamond Double Halo Engagement Ring on a Round Diamond Band in Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

Two rows around the oval

The inner halo sits tight against the girdle of the centre stone so it reads as part of the oval rather than as a frame. A second, finer row runs around the outside edge of the setting, which softens the transition from stone to metal and adds a rim of light that catches from the side as well as from above. Together they make the centre stone look substantially larger, usually by close to half a carat of apparent size.

The band

Rather than fine pave, the shoulders carry proper round diamonds, each roughly the same size as the next, set in shared claws so the stones touch and the metal between them almost disappears. That is a more expensive way to build a band than pave and a much brighter one, because each stone is large enough to throw its own flashes instead of contributing to a general shimmer.

A vintage outline

The oval shape of the halo, the doubled rows and the beaded edge belong to the Edwardian tradition rather than the modern one. It is a ring designed to look like something found rather than something bought, which is why it sits well beside a curved or contoured wedding band.

About the photographs

Some images show the ring worn with a curved band set with pearls and diamonds. That band is a separate piece and is not included with this ring.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose and yellow gold are both photographed here, and on a ring with this much diamond the metal reads as a warm outline drawn around the stones. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The halo and band diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters especially on the band here, where the stones are large enough for a mismatch to show.

About the bow tie

Every oval can show a bow tie, a dark band across the middle of the stone caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We check every oval by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Both rows of the halo are laid out around your particular centre stone so the spacing is even all the way round, and the band stones are graded to sit level with one another. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A ring with this many small stones needs the brush worked around the outside of the halo, underneath it, and along both sides of the band. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The halo and band stones are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the halo and band? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. Everything else is in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The halo overhangs the shoulders slightly, so a straight band leaves a small gap. A curved or contoured band nests properly against it, which is how it is photographed.

Can it be resized? Only a little. The diamonds run well round the band, leaving a short plain section at the back. Please measure carefully and we will build to your size.

Is the pearl band included? No. It is shown in the photographs to illustrate how the ring nests, but it is a separate piece.
