What a halo does

A ring of small stones set tight against the centre diamond extends its outline. From a normal viewing distance the eye reads one large oval rather than a stone with a border, which is why a two carat centre in a halo looks closer to three. It is the most effective way to add apparent size for the money.

Set close, and level

The halo sits tight to the girdle with no visible gap, and the tops of the small stones finish just below the centre stone rather than level with it. That difference in height is what keeps the centre diamond clearly the centre; halos set too high blur the two together.

A plain band underneath

No pave on the shoulders. A halo already puts a great many small stones at the top of the ring, and adding more down the finger makes the whole thing busy. The plain band also means a wedding ring sits flush against it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. A yellow band with a white metal halo makes the small stones read brighter and the centre look larger; tell us if you want it made that way. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The halo diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters because a halo sits directly against the centre stone and any difference in colour would show.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The halo is built around the measured stone so it follows the curve of that particular oval, and the small stones reduce slightly at the ends where the curve tightens. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing underneath the halo from below where hand cream collects between the small stones. A halo needs cleaning more often than a solitaire. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every halo stone are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The halo diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Do halo stones fall out? Rarely, when set properly. If one ever does, send the ring to us and we will replace it.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, against the plain band, though the halo overhangs slightly at the sides. A shaped band tucks under it if you prefer.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
