An oval cut laboratory grown diamond held in a half bezel that sweeps around it, on a band that crosses beneath and carries pave down one side. The metal wraps two opposite edges of the stone and leaves the other two open, so the ring reads as a curve rather than a setting.

A bezel that becomes the band

The wall of metal holding the stone does not stop at the setting. It continues into the shank on one side and crosses underneath, so there is no visible join between head and band. It is why the ring looks like one continuous sweep of gold with a diamond caught in it.

Open on two sides

Only two edges of the oval are covered. The other two are left bare against skin, which keeps the stone looking its full size and lets light in from the sides. A full bezel would be more protective but would shorten the outline.

Pave on one side only

The small stones run along the rising side of the band and stop where the crossover begins. Setting only one side keeps the asymmetry of the design intact; pave on both would make it look like a conventional shank that happens to curve.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which shows the sweep of the bezel best, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel wall is formed against the measured stone so it follows the curve of that particular oval, and the crossover is shaped and polished as one piece before the pave is set. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing along the open edges of the stone and under the crossover. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The band diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Is a half bezel secure? Yes. The wall grips a long section of the girdle rather than four small points, and there is nothing standing proud to catch.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not a straight one, because the band crosses over. We shape bands to follow this ring, so ask us if you would like one made to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back, though the crossover limits how far. One size either way is safe; beyond that we would rather remake it.
