Graduated, not uniform

Three accents on each side, each smaller than the last. Uniform accents would read as a short run of pave; graduating them makes the group belong to the centre stone, drawing the eye inward. The last and smallest sits where the shoulder meets the plain band, so there is no visible step between decorated and undecorated metal.

Why six claws on the oval

Two at each end and one on each side spreads pressure evenly around a long curve, holds a large stone more securely than four, and keeps each claw fine enough not to cut into the outline. On ovals above two carats we recommend six as a matter of course.

On the bow tie

Every oval has a faint dark band across its centre, caused by the way facets shadow themselves in an elongated brilliant. Well cut it is barely visible; badly cut it is a black stripe. We reject stones where it is pronounced.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each trio is laid out against the measured centre stone, since the graduation depends on the width of the oval, and the accents are set last so they sit tight to the claws without crowding them. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into each trio from underneath and behind the oval. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The shoulder trios are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Close, and closer than with full pave, because the accents stop well before the back of the ring. A slightly shaped band tucks under the trios.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I add a hidden halo? Yes, either now or later. The six claw basket leaves good access underneath.
