Half a bezel

A full bezel would close a thin wall of metal around the entire stone and reduce it to a silhouette. Wrapping only the lower edge protects the girdle where the ring meets the world and leaves the top edge of the oval bare against skin, which keeps the diamond looking as large as it is.

The band is the design

The metal leaves the finger, sweeps up to catch the stone and falls away again on the far side. There is no head, no gallery and no join: the setting is simply the place where the band grew thick enough to hold something. That is why the ring reads as one piece rather than as a stone fixed to a shank.

Set east west

Turned across the finger rather than along it, the oval spans the hand instead of pointing up it. It sits low, looks wide, and never catches on a sleeve. On a curved band it also follows the direction the metal is already travelling.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which shows the sweep of the band clearly, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. There are no accent stones on this ring, so that one report covers everything in it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel wall is formed against the measured stone so it follows the curve of the oval without a gap, and the wave is shaped and polished along its whole length, since any flat spot in a sweep this bare shows immediately. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing along the open edge of the stone and under the curve. A half bezel holds far less than claws do. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is a half bezel secure? Yes. The wall grips a long section of the girdle rather than four small points, and on an east west stone it takes the knocks from the direction they usually come.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not a straight one, because the shank waves. We shape bands to follow this ring, so ask us if you would like one made to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plainest, though the curve limits how far. One size either way is safe; beyond that we would rather remake it.

Can I have a different stone shape? An elongated cushion, a pear or a marquise all follow this curve well. Tell us when you order.
