Two halos doing different jobs

The inner halo is a tight ring of small round diamonds, set close to the girdle. Its job is to extend the outline of the oval and make the centre read larger. The outer halo is a looser arrangement of marquise and round stones pointing outward, and its job is shape: it turns a circle into something closer to a star. Together they give the ring a spread far beyond its centre stone.

Where this comes from

Double halo cluster rings with radiating outer stones were a Victorian and Edwardian idea, made when large single diamonds were rare and jewellers built size from many small stones instead. The construction survives because it works, and because it produces a ring that looks like nothing that can be bought in a chain store.

The contoured band

A straight band cannot sit against an outline like this. The wedding band is cut to follow the lower edge of the outer halo, dipping and rising so the two rings touch along their whole length. It is shaped against your finished engagement ring rather than to a template.

Why colour matching matters here

There are a great many accent stones, and they sit in direct contact with the centre diamond. If any of them were warmer in colour the centre would read grey, and with this many stones the effect compounds quickly. Every accent on both rings is matched to the same E colour and VVS2 clarity as the centre.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Both rings are made in the same metal. Rose and yellow gold are photographed here, and warm metal between the outer points is what separates them into individual rays rather than a solid mass. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the set at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

About the bow tie

Every oval has the potential for a bow tie, a dark band across the middle caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We check each oval by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. There are well over fifty individual settings on this pair of rings, every one cut and closed by hand under a microscope. It is the most labour intensive design in the catalogue. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, used more often than you would on a plain ring. With two halos and a nested band there are many places for lotion and soap to collect, particularly underneath the outer points and along the join between the rings.

Does the price include both rings? Yes. Every price on this page is for the engagement ring and the contoured wedding band together.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. All accents are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the halos? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. Both halos and the band stones are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will it feel heavy or catch on things? It is wider than a solitaire but not tall. The halos spread outward rather than upward, so the profile stays low.

Can it be resized? Both rings take about one size either way at most. Because the contoured band must stay aligned with the engagement ring, we would strongly prefer to build to your size.
