Shoulders that are built, not lined up

The accents are not a row of matched pave. Different shapes sit next to each other at slightly different heights, a baguette against a round, a marquise angled away from the band, so the shoulders look gathered rather than measured out. It is how cluster rings were made a century ago, and it gives a modern oval an antique setting to sit in.

Why it wears larger than it weighs

Because the shoulders climb towards the centre stone, the whole top of the ring is covered in diamond rather than just the middle. From a normal viewing distance the oval and its shoulders read as one wide shape, which is why this design looks substantial even at two carats.

The oval cut

A brilliant cut stretched into an ellipse. It keeps the fire of a round while covering more of the finger, and its long soft outline is the easiest shape to blend into shoulders full of small stones.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the antique style of the shoulders, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The shoulder diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Every shoulder stone gets its own seat cut at its own angle, because none of them sit the same way, and the baguettes have to line up straight against curved neighbours. It is slow work, and it is the difference between a cluster that looks designed and one that looks crowded. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working between the shoulder stones and behind the oval. A cluster holds more hand cream than a plain setting, so clean it a little more often. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the shoulders? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The shoulder diamonds are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not completely, since the shoulders are raised where they meet the band. A shaped band follows the line properly, and we will make one to match if you ask.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have these shoulders with an emerald cut instead? Yes, we make that version too, and the same shoulders suit an elongated cushion. Tell us when you order.
