The cathedral is the entire design here, and it is structural rather than decorative. Instead of a flat shank meeting the head abruptly, the shoulders rise in two smooth arches, the way stone buttresses climb to support a vault. Those arches brace the head from beneath, which is why the profile suits a large centre stone, and they lift the oval clear of the finger so light can pass underneath it.
