The halo nobody else sees

A conventional halo surrounds the stone on top and changes its outline. A hidden halo is set into the underside of the bezel, facing outwards from the profile of the ring, so the face of the diamond stays completely clean and the sparkle appears only when the hand turns. People who want a plain ring and people who want diamonds everywhere usually both like this solution.

Why a bezel, and not claws

A bezel wraps the entire girdle in a thin wall of metal. Nothing catches on clothing, the edge of the stone is protected where ovals are most often chipped, and the outline reads as one smooth shape rather than a stone gripped at four points. It is the setting we recommend for anyone who works with their hands and still wants a large diamond.

The oval cut

A brilliant cut stretched into an ellipse. It carries the fire of a round while covering more of the finger, and inside a bezel the metal rim exaggerates that length rather than interrupting it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, where the bezel rim frames the stone strongly. In white metal the rim recedes and the oval looks larger. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The hidden halo diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed around the measured stone so the rim stays even all the way round, then the halo is set into the underside before the head is joined to the band, because afterwards there is no access. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing up into the hidden halo from below, which is where anything that gets in will stay. A bezel keeps the front cleaner than claws do, but the underside still needs attention. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre oval and every hidden halo stone are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the hidden halo? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre oval. The halo diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Does a bezel make the stone look smaller? The rim covers the extreme edge of the girdle, so very slightly, yes. In exchange it protects the part of an oval most likely to chip, and the hidden halo adds back width from the side.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, very closely. A bezel with a plain shank is one of the easiest engagement rings to pair with a straight band.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
