A bezel with points

Bezelling a round stone is straightforward. Bezelling a marquise means forming two sharp internal corners in the metal and closing them over the most fragile part of the diamond without leaving a gap or crushing the tip. It is the difficult version of a simple idea, and it is why this setting protects a marquise better than any claw arrangement can.

Old mine faceting

The stone is cut in the older manner: fewer and larger facets, a higher crown, a more open centre. It gives broad slow flashes rather than fine glitter, and on a long shape like a marquise the effect is closer to an antique ring than a modern one.

Shoulders that fill the triangle

Where a pointed bezel meets a straight band there is a triangle of metal on each side. Rather than leave it plain, it is set with small accents that taper away with the shape. It is a detail borrowed directly from Victorian and Edwardian rings, where empty metal was rarely left empty.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits an antique cut, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The shoulder accents are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed around the measured stone, the two points are mitred and closed by hand, and the shoulder accents are set afterwards. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the bezel and across the shoulders. A full bezel keeps the stone cleaner than claws and has nothing to catch, which makes this one of the more practical marquise settings to wear daily. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre marquise and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The shoulder stones are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Do the points still need care? Far less than in a claw setting, since the metal covers them completely. This is the setting we recommend for anyone who has chipped a marquise before.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The bezel sits low and the band is straight, so a plain band meets it cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
