Mixed cuts on purpose

Most multi stone bands repeat one shape. Here the shapes change along the row, which is what stops it looking like an eternity band with a gap. An oval next to a pear next to a step cut catches light at different speeds, so the ring reads as a group of individual stones rather than a continuous glitter.

Set low, not raised

The diamonds sit down in the metal with only a thin rim of gold holding each one. Nothing stands above the dome, which means the ring slides under a glove, does not catch on knitwear and can be worn on the hand you actually use. It is the most practical way we know to wear this many stones.

The dome is solid

The band is heavy across the top, where the stones are, and thins at the back for comfort. The underside is cut away into an open gallery, which you can see in the photographs: it keeps the weight sensible and lets light in beneath the row.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the heavy dome, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every stone arrives IGI certified

The diamonds in the row are graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certification comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stones are laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The dome is carved from solid metal, each seat is cut to its own stone because no two in the row are the same shape, and the gallery is pierced from underneath afterwards. It is slow work and it is why this ring looks the way it does. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush across the row and through the open gallery underneath, where soap collects. A low set ring like this needs far less attention than a raised one. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? Every stone in the row is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

What does the carat option mean on a ring with several stones? It is the combined weight of the row. A 3 carat ring has three carats of diamond spread across the line, with the same graduation.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. IGI certification is included in the price on every variant.

Can this be an engagement ring? Many people buy it as one, and others wear it as an anniversary or right hand ring. It also stacks well with a plain band on either side.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain and thin. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
