A marquise cut lab grown emerald in a deep vivid green is set east west, lying across the finger so its full length is on show. Six slender claws hold the stone at the points and along the sides, and the shank behind it is not a plain band but a pair of fine wires that cross and twist around each other like the stems of a climbing plant, with a small round diamond set into the crossing point above and below the emerald. White metal is used throughout in the photographs because a cool white makes green read as its most saturated. The whole ring is deliberately light, so the colour of the stone is the only thing you see from a distance.

Band details

Two fine wires leave the base of the finger, twist once around each other on each shoulder and separate again to form the claws that hold the emerald. Where they cross, a single round diamond is set flush into the junction. The open spaces between the wires let light through the shank from every side, which keeps the ring feeling weightless on the hand and shows the green of the emerald from below as well as above.

It is a genuine emerald, beryl coloured by chromium or vanadium, grown in controlled conditions instead of being mined. It has the same chemistry, hardness and colour as a natural emerald, usually with fewer inclusions.

How hard is an emerald compared with a diamond
Emerald sits at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale against 10 for diamond. It is a stone for daily wear but not for heavy manual work. Take the ring off before the gym or gardening.

How should I clean it
Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on emerald, as heat and vibration can open fine surface reaching inclusions.

Which metal suits green best
White metals give the strongest colour contrast and make the green look deeper. Yellow gold warms the stone and gives a period feel. Both are popular and the choice is personal.

Can I wear a wedding band beside it
Yes. Because the stone sits across the finger and low to the hand, a plain or pave band sits flush against the twisted shank on either side.
