What makes this arrangement work is that the outline never repeats itself. The marquise tapers to a point at both ends, each pear tapers at one end and swells at the other, and setting the pears with their points outward means the ring reads as a single elongated form that narrows at all four extremities. Yellow gold is shown here and warm metal beneath three white stones makes the outline of the trio very easy to read from a distance. Rose gold does the same in a softer register. White gold and sterling silver merge the claws into the diamonds so the three stones look like one continuous piece of light.
