A marquise cut lab grown diamond held in six claws on a plain slim band. A marquise has two points rather than one, and both of them need protecting, so this setting uses a V shaped claw at each end that wraps around the tip, with four more claws along the sides holding the widest part of the curve. Six claws on a marquise is not excess. It is what the shape requires if the points are to be safe and the long curved sides still held evenly. Everything else is left alone. No halo, no pave, no accent stones, an open gallery beneath, and a plain polished band, so the only thing on the finger is the longest and most dramatic outline any diamond shape produces. With no accent stones anywhere, the metal colour is the only other decision. Yellow and rose gold trace the long outline warmly, white gold makes the setting disappear so the shape does all the work. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and better protects two fine V claws.

Frequently asked questions

Why six claws on a marquise?
A marquise has two points, and each needs its own V shaped claw to cover and protect it. Four more claws hold the long curved sides. Fewer than six would leave either a point exposed or the sides insufficiently supported.

Are the points fragile?
The points are the only vulnerable part of a marquise, which is exactly why both sit inside V claws here. Properly set, the shape wears as well as any other.

Does a marquise look larger than other shapes?
Yes, more than any of them. A marquise has the largest face up area per carat of any diamond shape, because so little of its weight sits in depth. It also elongates the finger more than an oval or pear.

Should it be worn north to south or east to west?
North to south, running along the finger, is traditional and gives the lengthening effect. Set east to west it becomes a modern statement piece, and we can build it either way.

Is this easy to pair with a wedding band?
Yes. The shank is plain and straight where a band meets it, though a flat band will sit against the widest part of the stone rather than flush along it.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. Same carbon structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.
