A marquise gains more from a hidden halo than most shapes. Its outline tapers to a point at each end, which means the basket underneath is long, narrow and unusually visible from the side, more so than under a round or a cushion. Left bare that is a lot of plain metal on show. Filling it with pave turns the most exposed part of the setting into the brightest, and it does so without adding a single millimetre to the width of the ring as seen from above.

Band details

The shank is a plain fine band with a high polish and no stones. It runs at a constant width all the way round and meets the base of the basket directly, which keeps the ring low against the finger despite the height the hidden halo adds under the stone.

Yellow gold is shown here and it makes the hidden halo read as a bright line against warm metal when the ring is turned. Rose gold does the same more gently. What is a hidden halo?
It is a ring of small diamonds set around the basket underneath the centre stone rather than around its outline. It is invisible from above, so the ring keeps a clean solitaire look, and it shows as a surprise line of light from the side.

Why does a marquise suit a hidden halo particularly well?
Because a marquise basket is long and narrow, more of it is on view from the side than with a compact shape. The halo turns that exposed metal into sparkle.

Are the points of a marquise easy to chip?
The points are the thinnest part of the stone, which is why both ends sit inside V shaped claw tips here. The tip wraps the point completely so any knock lands on metal.

Does a marquise look larger than other shapes?
