Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%A marquise cut lab grown diamond is held by six claws above a hidden halo of small round diamonds, and the band beneath it is broken into a chain of leaf shaped plates, each edged in milgrain and set with a few tiny stones on its face. Between the leaves the shank narrows to a plain wire, so the band reads as a stem carrying a line of small bright leaves.
The milgrain is what dates this style and what makes it expensive to do properly. Milgrain is a row of minute beads raised along an edge with a knurled wheel, pushed one bead at a time by hand. On a straight edge the wheel can be run in a single pass. On a leaf shaped plate the edge curves continuously, which means the wheel has to be re-angled every few beads to keep the row centred and evenly spaced, and any hesitation shows as a flat spot in the line. That is the tell between a hand finished antique style band and a cast imitation of one: on a real milgrained edge the beads follow the curve at a constant pitch, and each catches light at a slightly different angle to its neighbour, which is what gives the edge its soft granular glitter instead of a hard polished line.
The shank alternates between the set leaf plates and short lengths of plain narrow wire. That alternation keeps the metal weight low and lets light pass between the leaves, so the band looks lighter on the finger than a continuous set shank of the same width.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is fully hallmarked. Yellow gold, shown in the photographs, is the traditional metal for milgrain work because a warm tone deepens the shadow between the beads and makes the texture more visible.
The ring is made to your finger size. Select your size at checkout. If you are unsure, we will send you a printable size guide before we begin work, and we adjust the number of leaves so the rhythm of the band stays even at any size in our range.
We can change the carat weight, the length to width ratio of the marquise, the number of leaves or remove the hidden halo. Write to us through https://mapplegems.com/pages/contact and our workshop will prepare a quotation and a rendering before any metal is cut.
Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It is carbon in the same crystal structure as a mined diamond, with the same hardness and the same optical properties, graded on the same scales.
Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.
What is milgrain and why use it
It is a row of tiny beads worked along an edge by hand. It softens the outline of a plate, adds a granular sparkle that polished metal cannot give, and hides the small scratches an exposed edge collects.
Are the points of the marquise protected
Yes. Both points sit inside V shaped claws that wrap the two facets meeting at each tip rather than gripping from one side.
Will the milgrain wear away
Only very slowly and only on the highest edges. We re-cut it free of charge whenever the ring comes in for servicing.
Can the ring be resized
Within a moderate range. Resizing is done in the plain wire between two leaves so no setting is disturbed.
How long does the ring take to make
Each ring is made to order. The milgrain is applied by hand, so production usually takes twelve to sixteen working days before dispatch.
A lab grown diamond gives you a larger stone and a higher colour and clarity grade for the same budget, with a traceable origin and no mining. In an antique style design it also lets the many small accents be matched to one another, which is what keeps a busy band looking clean rather than patchy.
Mapple Gems is a jewellery workshop in Surat, India, the city where a large share of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. We grow, cut, grade and set in one place, which is why we can offer certified stones in fully hallmarked gold at workshop prices.
