Three of the same shape

Most three stone rings contrast the centre with a different cut on each side, usually a tapered baguette or a trillion. Using three marquises instead means the side stones repeat the centre rather than frame it. Set at an angle at the shoulders, their points fan outward and the whole top of the ring becomes one shape rather than three objects in a row. It is a distinctly vintage arrangement, common in the 1960s and 1970s and rarely made now.

What a three stone ring means

The convention is past, present and future, one stone for each. It is an old idea and a durable one, and it explains why three stone rings appear as often at an anniversary or a ring upgrade as at a proposal.

Why the band stays plain

Three marquise diamonds already fill the width of the finger. Adding pave would push the design into something ornate and would make the ring far harder to clean, since a marquise setting has six claws and two points to work around. A polished knife edge shank keeps all the weight of the design in the stones and leaves plenty of plain metal for resizing.

Six points, all guarded

A marquise is thinnest where its two curves meet, and this ring has six of those tips. Each one sits in a v claw that wraps the two edges meeting at the point rather than pressing down from above, and the side stones are tilted so their outer points sit low against the shoulders instead of standing proud.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White gold is photographed here, which is the traditional choice for a three stone ring because a colourless setting tints none of the three diamonds from below. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The two marquise side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters more here than on most rings because three stones of one shape sit touching and any mismatch shows immediately.

About the bow tie

Every marquise can show a bow tie, a dark band across the waist of the stone caused by the cut proportions rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. With three marquises on one ring we check all three by eye and reject any that show it, because a bow tie in one stone and not the others is worse than a bow tie in all of them.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The side stones are selected for this particular ring so that all three marquises share one outline and one colour, and the angle of the two side settings is set by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work the brush into the two gaps where the side stones meet the centre, and underneath through the gallery. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The two marquise side stones are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The two side stones are in addition, and they are scaled to suit the centre you choose.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The side stones angle down toward the shoulders, so a straight band sits close but not perfectly flush. A gently curved band follows the shape better.

Can it be resized? Easily. There are no stones on the shank itself, so one or two sizes either way is straightforward.
