The star outline

Most three stone rings run all three stones in the same direction, so the ring reads as one long line. Here the two side marquises are turned ninety degrees and set across the finger, points outward. The result is a cross, or a stylised flower, depending on how you look at it. It gives the ring width as well as length, and it fills a finger far beyond what the carat weight alone would suggest.

Why marquise sides rather than pears or trillions

Marquise side stones taper to a point at both ends, so they tuck against the curve of the centre stone with no gap and no filler metal. Pear sides leave a rounded end that has to be masked. Trillions sit flat and blunt. The marquise is the only common shape that mirrors the centre stone exactly, which is what makes the star read cleanly.

Set low, worn easily

The whole head sits close to the finger. Because the side stones spread outwards rather than upwards, the ring has presence without height, and it will pass under a glove or a coat sleeve without catching. Each of the six points on the three stones sits inside a v claw.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White gold is photographed here and makes the three colourless stones read as one continuous shape. In yellow or rose gold the star outline stands out more sharply against the metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The two side marquises are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The two side stones are selected to match the centre in colour and in the angle of the taper, then the head is built around all three at once so the points line up. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush underneath the head where the three stones meet. Check the outer points of the side stones now and then, as those sit at the widest part of the ring.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. Both side marquises are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The side stones are in addition and are scaled to suit the centre.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The side stones sit low, so a straight band tucks underneath them without a gap on most fingers.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank is plain metal, so one or two sizes either way is straightforward.
