Brilliant against step

A marquise is a brilliant cut, covered in triangular and kite shaped facets that scatter light into flashes. A baguette is a step cut, with long parallel facets that behave like a mirror and give broad, calm reflections instead. Set next to each other, each one makes the other more obvious. The centre stone sparkles harder because the sides do not compete with it.

Why tapered, not straight

A tapered baguette is wider at the end nearest the centre stone and narrows as it runs down the shoulder. That taper does two jobs. It visually pushes the eye towards the centre, and it lets the side stones sit flush against the widest part of the marquise without a wedge of metal filling the gap.

A shape from the deco period

Marquise centres with baguette shoulders were made in quantity in the 1920s and 1930s, when step cuts and strong geometry were in fashion. This ring keeps that structure but sets it on a plain modern shank rather than a pierced or engraved gallery, so it reads clean rather than antique.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White gold is photographed here, which is the traditional choice for this design because the colourless metal lets the three stones read as one continuous line. Yellow and rose gold separate them more. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The baguettes are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters more on a step cut than on any other shape.

Why clarity matters on a baguette

Step cut facets are large and open, so there is nowhere for an inclusion to hide. A VVS2 baguette stays clean to the eye. This is the main reason we do not offer lower clarity grades on this design.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The pair of baguettes is cut to match the width of your centre stone, so the three stones form one unbroken line rather than a centre with two afterthoughts. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush along the channel at both ends of each baguette. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. Both baguettes are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the baguettes? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The side stones are in addition and are scaled to the centre.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes. The baguettes sit low and flat along the shoulders, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, within a size or two. The baguettes stop at the shoulders and the back of the shank is plain.
