A starburst either side

The accents are not laid in a line. They radiate outward from the widest part of the marquise in small groups, larger nearest the centre stone and smaller as they spread, so the top of the ring reads as a single pointed shape rather than a stone with decorated shoulders. It is why this design looks considerably bigger on the hand than its carat weight suggests.

Why it suits a marquise

A marquise is already a pointed, directional shape. Radiating accents follow that direction outward instead of fighting it, and they fill the awkward gap where a long stone narrows towards the band.

The points are covered

Each tip of the marquise is a thin edge of diamond and the place where damage occurs. Both sit inside full claws rather than standing clear of them, which costs a little of the outline and saves the stone.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each cluster is laid out against the measured centre stone, since how far it should spread depends on the width of the marquise, and every accent gets its own seat cut at its own angle. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into each cluster from underneath. Check the point claws once a year, as you would on any marquise. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre marquise and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The clusters are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not perfectly, since the clusters spread down towards the band. A shaped or chevron band follows the line, and we will make one to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have it set east west? Yes, lying across the finger with the clusters at either end instead. Tell us when you order.
